Malaysia-Republic of China’s relations have spanned 50 years and on 23 May 2024, Sabah’s Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Haji Noor celebrated the occasion with a reception with the Republic’s Consul General, Dr Huang Shi Fang. The event - marking the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between Malaysia and China – was held at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC), Kota Kinabalu and was graced by Head of State Tun Juhar Mahiruddin and his wife Toh Puan Hajah Norlidah Tan Sri R.M. Jasni.

"Malaysia’s 50 years of diplomatic relations with China is a testament to the boundless power of friendship and cooperation and Sabah is honoured to be a part of this journey," the CM said. "Sabah has held bilateral economic exchanges with China and we are happy that Sabah continues to be one of the popular destinations for Chinese visitors, with 776,845 visitors from China between January and March 2024. We welcome more visitors from China including those seeking to do business here."

Hajiji commended Dr Huang Shi Fang and her predecessors for their remarkable roles in strengthening ties between Malaysia and China. "We can nourish mutual benefits and align our development strategies with China, combining the realisation of Chinese modernisation with our Malaysia Madani and Hala Tuju Sabah Maju Jaya aspirations," he said.
