Indian Institute To Set Up Campus in Sabah

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM) is discussing with the Sabah Government the establishment of its campus in Sabah. It will be the Institute’s first Asian campus outside India. The move is part of IITM's strategic expansion to develop a global innovation ecosystem, with Malaysia identified as its initial foray into Asia following the success of its first international campus in 2023 in Zanzibar, Africa.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Hajiji Haji Noor welcomed the plan by India's premier higher learning institution, to spread its wing to Sabah and said that the University College Sabah Foundation (UCSF) will discuss with IITM to forge an academic alliance and collaboration. Hajiji - who is UCSF Chancellor – met with Dr Thirumalai Madhavnarayan, IITM Global Engagement Chief Executive Officer; Professor Raghunathan Remgaswamy, Dean of IITM Global Engagement; and Datuk Seri Dr Vinod Sekha, Chairman of Petra Group and Sekhar Foundation on 26 February 2025 in Kota Kinabalu.
