The Sabah State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to environmental sustainability with plans to expand the Kinabalu UNESCO Global Geopark (KUGGP) and the Crocker Range Biosphere Reserve, aligning with the Hala Tuju Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) roadmap.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Hajiji Haji Noor said the international recognition of Kinabalu Park and Crocker Range by UNESCO places Sabah among the few regions worldwide to achieve the "Triple Crown of UNESCO" status. He emphasized that this honor comes with the responsibility to strengthen scientific research, boost public awareness, and preserve natural resources sustainably.

The state plans to extend KUGGP to Tuaran, an area rich in biodiversity and eco-tourism potential. A Public Awareness Center will also be established in Tuaran to support education and community engagement on geoheritage conservation.

Hajiji highlighted that Geopark development must not only focus on conservation but also empower local communities through tourism. He cited successful models like Kiulu Farmstay and Misompuru Homestay as examples for Tuaran.

He also noted the successful Geo-Sulaman Scientific Expedition (EGOS 2025) and announced more studies in Ranau and Tuaran to support the Biosphere Reserve’s expansion. The initiative is backed by various stakeholders, including government agencies, researchers, and local communities, working together to preserve Sabah’s natural heritage and promote sustainable development.
