A fire disaster at Kampung Bahagia, Batu Sapi, Sandakan, destroyed 1,000 houses – almost the entire village - on 19 April 2026. The State Government has responded immediately with assistance to victims of the fire, each Household Head (Ketua Isi Rumah or KIR) receiving RM2,000 in cash.

Pusat Zakat Sabah and Perbadanan Baitulmal Sabah have also contributed aid to the victims. The government has set up six temporary evacuation centres (PPS) to accommodate the fire victims.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Hajiji Haji Noor visited families at site on 20 April 2026. “The destruction in the area was extensive, almost the entire village destroyed,” Hajiji said.

“We hope this assistance will help ease their burden at this time.” Commenting on redevelopment plans, Hajiji said the State Government is studying several proposals, including land reclamation for housing development, pending a comprehensive report from the Sandakan District Disaster Management Committee, and from the Sandakan Municipal Council.
