Unhealthy API Readings in Kota Kinabalu and Three Locations

Kota Kinabalu’s Air Pollutant Index (API) is the highest in Sabah. Three other locations recorded unhealthy APIs. Sabah Department of Environment (DOE)’s data showed 171 level for Kota Kinabalu; 156 for Kimanis and Keningau; and 132 for Tawau. Several areas in the state recorded poor air quality conditions. Sandakan recorded an API reading of 91, which is categorised as moderate.

The State Disaster Management Committee (Jawatankuasa Pengurusan Bencana Negeri or JPBN) advised the public, particularly children, senior citizens, pregnant women and individuals with respiratory problems, to reduce outdoor activities and avoid strenuous physical activities. For people who need to go outdoors, JPBN advise them to wear suitable face masks, drink sufficient water, maintain personal hygiene after outdoor activities. For those who remain indoors, the committee advise them to ensure good ventilation.

JPBN also reminded the public to avoid open burning and to keep abreast of the latest API readings, advisories issued by DOE and health authorities. Those who experience symptoms such as coughing, shortness of breath, or chest pain are advised to seek treatment at the nearest healthcare facility. JPBN will continue to monitor air quality conditions throughout the state and advised the public to take precautionary measures to reduce health risks arising from exposure to polluted air.
