Tongod’s RM1.2 billion Cement Factory
The Government will set up Sabah’s largest integrated clinker and cement factory in Kampung Kawayoi Pinangah in Tongod, central Sabah.
Tongod District was selected as the site of the new RM1.2 billion cement factory because of the availability of resources for cement production. The government’s vision is to use the cement industry in Tongod as an economic catalyst. With the new and massive factory sited in the district, other infrastructures would follow including roads infrastructures; water treatment plant; and electricity and telecommunications which will leapfrog the local community’s socio-economic profile.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Hajiji Haji Noor was at the groundbreaking ceremony on 27 April 2024 at Kampung Penangah, Tongod. The CM said that the project would create more than 1,000 job opportunities for the local community. “Once operational, the new factory would complement the existing Cement Industries Sabah (CIS) Sdn Bhd factory in Sapangar, Kota Kinabalu,” Hajiji said. “The new factory will boost our cement production and can potentially lead to the export level. It is also part of our initiatives to end hardcore poverty in the state, which we have reduced by 40 per cent.”
During the visit to the district, the Chief Minister presented 83 land grants, with a total acreage of 461.1 (186.06 hectares) to the villagers.
