Sabah’s agroforestry has achieved remarkable successes. Many agroforestry models have helped improve soil health, increase crop yields, and provide economic benefits for local communities. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Hajiji Haji Noor said that Sabah has constant pushed agroforestry to improve ecosystem services, foster climate resilience, support rural livelihoods and ensure food security. Sabah’s commitment to biodiversity and sustainability is reinforced by the set-up of Sabah Biodiversity Centre (SaBC) in 2008, which is now an entity under the Chief Minister's Department, and which is one of the key partners in the “International Conference on Biodiversity, Agroforestry, Non-Wood Forest Products, and Sustainable Livelihoods (ICBANS) 2024” held on 18 October 2024 at the at the Hilton Hotel, Kota Kinabalu.

In his speech, delivered by Datuk Abidin Madingkir, Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, the CM said that SaBC has successfully managed Sabah's biological resources; conservation, protection, and legal oversight of biological resources.

“This conference is a good reminder that we have unprecedented opportunities to make a meaningful difference. Through collaboration, innovation, and knowledge sharing, we can work together to safeguard our planet's biodiversity and ensure that the livelihoods of millions are supported in sustainable and equitable ways," the CM said.

“Being part of the biodiversity community, Sabah recognised the urgency of preserving its natural heritage. Our state is home to iconic species like the orangutan, proboscis monkey, and pygmy elephant. Mount Kinabalu, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is home to an incredible array of flora and fauna.”

The conference is co-organised by the V Sivaram Research Foundation (VSRF); the Indian Council of Agricultural Research - Central Agroforestry Research Institute (ICAR-CAFRI); and the Society for Conservation and Resource Development of Medicinal Plant.
